You can cancel that trip to the Ironton Vision Center for now. The Ironton Fighting Tigers are seeing things in a new light.

Ironton coach Roger Zornes said the team is beginning to see things the way he wants, and as a result the Fighting Tigers are now 9-1 after a 61-46 win over the Portsmouth Trojans Friday.

"They're seeing how to play basketball," Ironton coach Roger Zornes said. "We were patient and we looked for the good shot. We made good passes and didn't force the ball."

The good passing was evident as the Fighting Tigers had 19 assists. Joe Zornes had six assists and both Josh Sands and Brigham Waginger five each.

Derique Bacon scored 17 points and had six rebounds, Sands got 11 points and six rebounds, and Waginger added 10 points. Joe Zornes also had three steals.

Portsmouth (4-6) was led by Ash Green with 15 points. Tyler Clifford had 9 points and seven rebounds.

Ironton shot well from the field, hitting 26 of 50 shots for 52 percent. Conversely, Portsmouth was

19 of 48 for 39.6 percent.

"Portsmouth shot the ball well at times. They shot better than when we've seen them. When we changed our defenses up, I think we caught them off-guard," Zornes said.

Ironton jumped out to a 10-4 lead on a three-point play by Bacon, but a layup by Justin Nelson put the Trojans up 12-10. Waginger made a layup and Joe Zornes hit a 10-footer with 35 seconds left and it was 14-12.

The Trojans tied the game at 16-16 on a layup by Clifford. Ironton answered with an 8-0 run to make it 24-16 with 3:45 to go in the half and never trailed the rest of the way.

A put back by Bacon gave Ironton a 28-21 halftime lead. Portsmouth then closed to within 3 points on three different occasions. Sands drained a 3-pointer, then had a steal and layup at the buzzer gave Ironton a 41-33 lead after three quarters.

Portsmouth cut the deficit to 46-43 on follow up shot by Clifford with 4:58 to play, but Dennis Gagai made a layup and Bacon scored 5 straight points as Ironton went on a 13-0 run and it was 59-43 with a minute to play.

"We had one spot where we didn't rebound well. We had one guy going to the boards and that's when they made some runs," Zornes said.

In the reserve game, Ironton (10-0) won 46-30 as Brent McBride scored 14 points, and Shawn Miller and Dennis Gagai 7 each. Andrew Newman had 15 for Portsmouth.
