Blame it on the Internet, the hustle and bustle of modern life or just plain fate, but the simple fact is: the interests of Lawrence County residents are as diverse as they come.
Finding a common thread between a resident of Proctorville and Kitts Hill or Franklin Furnace in nearby Scioto County may, at first glance, seem a bit difficult.
Each area of our county contains unique idiosyncrasies, unique ambitions, unique pride and unique need.
One common thread does, however, wind its way through the highways, byways and back roads -- the United Way of the River Cities.
The unique organization provides services to 29 agencies that work in Lawrence County. In fact, United Way personnel say the organization's funding -- provided to its member agencies -- winds up touching about 40 percent of the county's residents.
That's right, dozens and dozens of your friends, neighbors and co-workers see first-hand the benefit of the United Way. In fact, the massive reach of the United Way makes it one of the best ways to make a broad impact on our community.
For years the organization has raised funds throughout the United States, helping to provide money for everything from T-ball programs to senior citizen functions. In Lawrence County, United Way funding helps support such great community groups as the Boy Scouts, the City Welfare Mission, the Well Child Clinic and the Special Olympics.
Unfortunately, this year's fund-raising campaign may fall short of its goal unless each resident who is able, donates whatever he or she can donate.
Even though a donation may seem relatively small by itself, combined with others like it, the power this community can muster to help itself can be staggering.
A key to remember is, unlike many other charitable organizations, every cent donated to the United Way stays in the Tri-State.
During this holiday season, give something back to your community. Give to the United Way. Call them today at 532-2700 and make your pledge.
