Last-second foul shots lift Spartans over Chesapeake

WELLSTON -- It was a classic within a classic.

Jordan Hilsher sank two free throws with four seconds as the Marion Pleasant Spartans edged the Chesapeake Panthers 39-38 Saturday at the annual National Hoops Classic at Wellston High School.

Chesapeake's Most Valuable Player of the game.

Kyle Ridge scored 16 points and was Pleasant's MVP of the game.

After trailing 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, Chesapeake was up 14-13, but then Marion Pleasant ran off 11 straight points including a pair of 3-pointers by Ridge. The lead was 27-15 at the half.

Karle scored 6 points the third quarter to spark a 13-4 run. A 3-pointer by Thompson closed the gap to 31-28 to end the quarter.

Chesapeake Karle's two foul shots, and baskets by Gossett and Adam Skeens put the Panthers ahead 34-31.

Gossett scored with 2:17 to play for a 38-35 lead. Jake Bennett hit a basket with 1:55 left to get Pleasant with a point.

The Panthers missed the front end of two one-and-one's setting up Hilsher's free throws.

Ridge stole the inbounds pass to seal the win.

New Boston 87, Coal Grove 50

COAL GROVE -- B. J. Darling

led three players in double figures as the New Boston Tigers beat the Coal Grove Hornets 87-50 Saturday in a non-league game.

Darling had 21 points, Jacob Moore 12, and Aaron Spriggs 11 for New Boston.

Jimmy Lemon scored 17 points to pace the Hornets. Tim Elliott and Tyler Sexton added 8 points each.

Coal Grove (0-1) led 19-17 at the end of the first quarter, but New Boston outscored the Hornets 20-9 the second quarter to go up 37-28 at the break.

The Tigers kept rolling in the second half as they pulled away to a 61-37 lead after three quarters.
