Raise proposed for police, firefighters

Both the Local chapter 532 International Association of Firefighters and the Fraternal Order of Police will receive a two percent pay increase if the Ironton City Council passes two ordinances proposed Monday at a Finance Committee meeting.

The Firefighter's contract is basically the same as previous contracts except for the raise, said Councilman Jesse Roberts. The raise will replace the final year of the three-year contract and would be retroactive until April 1.

The F.O.P's contract expired on April 1. If the ordinance passes, they will receive a new three-year contract with very few differences. Among the differences was a clothing allowance increase of $20 a year.

City officials have been working on getting the deals done for a while and need to get them passed as soon as possible, said Mayor Bob Cleary.

Cleary said it is important to be fair to the men and make sure everything is correct in the contract.

The City Council will vote on both ordinances Thursday in a regular meeting. Michael Caldwell/The Ironton Tribune
