Papa would have been proud. Last week, St. Joe booster and former St. Lawrence Packers youth football coach John Hacker died. Friday, his grandsons – Chris Laber and Shawn Hacker – turned in a performance that would have made their grandfather very happy.
Shawn Hacker scored 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds while Laber got seven points and nine rebounds to help the St. Joe Flyers beat the Green Bobcats 51-45.
Bill Dressel turned in a big game for the Flyers as well with a game-high 19 pionts to go along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
"That was a good win," Flyers coach Adam Simpson said. "The key was Shawn, Chris, and Bill just controlling the boards the second half. And Joe Laber hit a couple of shots late that were real big."
Ben Dyer drained four 3-pointers and scored 13 points while handing out four assists before fouling out to lead the Bobcats (13-6). Timmy Yarnell had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Jacob Yarnell had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Four points by Timmy Yarnell got Green off to a 7-5 lead the first quarter. Both teams score eight points the second period to make it 15-13 at the half. Dyer nailed two 3-pointers while Dressel had six points for the Flyers.
Hacker matched Jacob Yarnell with six points the third quarter as the Flyers got within 29-28.
Dyer scored seven points before fouling out, but Dressel and Joe Laber scored six points each and Dressel had two key steals in the final minutes.
St. Joe converted 17 of 24 from the line for the game and was 11 of 14 the fourth quarter.
"Bill hurt his wrist and it was bothering him, but he still had a good all-around game."
In the Division IV sectional at Alexander High School, St. Joe plays South Gallia at 7 p.m. Monday while Green plays Eastern Pike at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. The Flyers hosted Portsmouth East Saturday night.
