SOUTH POINT – The Rock Hill Redwomen needed two things to happen. And they did.
First, Rock Hill beat the South Point Lady Pointers 55-43 Thursday to earn at least a share of the Ohio Valley Conference championship. Next, they waited to see if Fairland could upset OVC co-leader Chesapeake.
Fairland did just that, rolling past Chesapeake 75-37 to give Rock Hill the title outright.
"That was great for the girls," Rock Hill coach Amy Hughes said. "After losing two key seniors from last year when we finished third and to come back and win this, it shows something about this team. They played hard all year and they deserve it.
"It was nice for the girls to win the title and we had good fan support that was nice for the girls. But South Point battled us. You can’t take anything away from them. The played hard."
Sisters Jordan Edwards, a senior, and Miranda Edwards, a junior, combined for 37 points as Rock Hill finished 7-1 in the OVC and 16-4 overall. Miranda had 19 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four assists while Jordan had 18 points and seven rebounds.
The game was tied 23-23 at the half, but Miranda Edwards scored seven points the third quarter as Rock Hill took a 41-33 lead.
Jordan Edwards had nine points the fourth quarter as she made 5-of-7 from the line. Miranda Edwards was 3-of-5 and Martha Lambert went 2-2 to secure the win
"Miranda shot the ball pretty well. She and Jordan just led by example. And as a team we played defense," said Hughes.
Sarah Stevens and Latisha Koukos scored 11 points each to lead the Lady Pointers, 10-10 overall and 2-6 in the OVC.
The Redwomen play next Thursday at 8 p.m. against Miami Trace at Huntington Ross.
