PEDRO – It as a defense that would have made Perry Mason proud. Mixing a stingy defense with some long-range shooting, the Rock Hill Redwomen beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 58-44 Thursday in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams.

"I thought our defense was very good. Marie Bamer and Julie Mootz did a nice job on (Erin) Sutphin, and Miranda Edwards did a great job on Lisa Perry by stopping her penetration and neutralizing her quickness," Rock Hill coach Amy Hughes said.

"And Rachel Hartwig did a good job on (Emily) Delimpo. Rachel didn’t get many rebounds, but she kept Delimpo off the boards and that allowed our other girls to get the rebound."

Courtney Doughman had 24 points including three 3-pointers and also grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Redwomen who improved to 9-2 overall.

Jordan Edwards scored 17 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists. Miranda Edwards had 14 points and two assists while Bamer pulled down four rebounds.

Perry led Chesapeake (7-4) with 12 points. Delimpo finished with nine points and Sutphin eight.

Rock Hill led 13-9 after the first quarter and then Doughman scored nine points the second quarter as the lead was stretched to 31-17 at the half.

"We’ve had some good practices and the girls have been really energetic and pulled for each other. It was a team effort," said Hughes.

The spread was 44-30 after three quarter and Jordan Edwards scored seven points the fourth quarter as the Redwomen maintained their cushion.

On Monday, Chesapeake is at Coal Grove in an OVC game while Rock Hill visits Raceland, Ky., in a non-league contest.
