The two-day event begins with children’s activities and musical acts Saturday, Sept. 8, said Dott Mayne, festival chair.

The festival – held at Ohio University Southern Campus – runs until 4 p.m. Saturday and continues 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9.

"This festival promises to be one of the best in our 15-year history," Mrs. Mayne said.

Free pony rides and popcorn, a petting zoo and entertainment for children 12 and under kicks off Kids Day at 10 a.m. Sept. 8.

There will also be applebutter making and craft displays throughout the festival. Boy Scouts will be on litter patrol, while well-known Tri-state clown "Peppy" will entertain. OUSC will be giving trolley rides and visitors can enjoy a look-see at the festival’s historic Conestoga wagon.

There is plenty to keep Lawrence Countians and families from neighboring states occupied throughout the weekend, Mrs. Mayne said.

Among other activities to enjoy: Civil War historian Judge Frank McCown explaining his historic exhibits; an Afro-American postage stamp exhibit in the Academic Building; children’s stories, courtesy of Briggs Lawrence County Public Library; OUSC science professor "Mr. Wizard;" an old-fashioned Appalachian Church service; and the usual beans and cornbread.
