Ironton City Council’s Parks and Recreation committee members discussed opening the pool at last night’s meeting.

City workers are busy preparing the pool for opening day, slated for the Friday before Memorial Day (May 25).

Councilman Richard Price said the city signs over operation of the pool through an operation management agreement. The city provides chemicals, pays the utilities and the management group assumes liability and responsibility for the operations of the facility.

Price said the city budgets about $11,000 annually to run the pool and last season, the cost to the city was under the budgeted amount.

The city is looking into fixing leaks at the pool. Price said water consumption at the pool last year was around 65,000-72,000 gallons of water a day in a pool that has an over 300,000 gallon capacity. Essentially, Price explained, the pool recycles itself every five days.

Although some of the water is lost to evaporation, most is lost to the leak. The city has identified the source of the leak and is working towards fixing the problem. Price said city workers will be busy over the next two weeks to fix the leak.

Price said the leaking water is going into the sewer system because of drains under the pool. The water is going into the Rachel Creek storm sewer and filtering into the Ohio River, he said.
