COAL GROVE – The Coal Grove Hornets are doing some things differently. But no matter how different, they are still winning.
The Hornets improved to 2-0 on the season as they downed the St. Joe Flyers 11-1 Thursday.
Eric Tackett pitched a 3-hitter, struck out nine, and walked four in picking up the win.
Coal Grove banged out 11 hits with Tyler Waller going 3-for-4 with four runs batted in, and Ryan Brown and Andy Dean 2-3.
"We hit the ball better," Hornets coach John Jones said. "Tackett threw well. He walked four and that’s not normally his way, but it’s still early.
"Waller had some good at-bats the night before. I’m pleased with him so far. And Andy Dean has really been hitting the ball for us."
St. Joe got its lone run in the first inning.
Kyle Johnson walked, went to second on a fielder’s choice, and Rusty Yaniko had a two-out, RBI double.
Coal Grove tied the game in the bottom of the first. Brown and Waller singled, they pulled off a double steal, and Dean singled.
The Hornets took the lead with four in the second.
Brown had a two-out single and Waller homered. Keaton followed with a solo shot. Dean then singled, s tole second, and Scott Lewis had an RBI single.
Coal Grove erupted for six runs in the sixth to end the game.
Adkins and Brown walked, moved up on a wild pitch, and Waller delivered a two-run single.
Keaton and Josh Wheeler walked to load the bases and Stevens walked to force in a a run. Josh Keaton hit into a fielder’s choice as a run scored, Tackett walked, and Adkins had a two-run double to end the game.
