MERCERVILLE – Too much balance. The South Gallia Rebels used a balanced attack with four players in double figures as they beat the St. Joe Flyers 72-55 Friday night.
Kyle Mooney scored 17 points to lead the Rebels. Josh Waugh scored 14, Steve Reece had 13, and Mickie Massie added 10. Reece also had nine rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Chris Laber had a game-high 20 points and Bill Dressel scored 12 to pace the Flyers.
"We just didn’t play well," Flyers coach Kevin Sheridan said. "We made too many mistakes that were our fault, but they did have good balance."
Six different players scored the first quarter as South Gallia took a 20-13 lead. Laber had nine points to keep St. Joe close.
Dressel scored seven points the second quarter, but Massie had six and Waugh five as South Gallia extended its lead to 39-26.
Mooney hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 11 points to spark the Rebels the third quarter and pull away to a 57-37 lead. Dressel had five points for the Flyers.
St. Joe was just 19-of-58 from the field and had only 22 rebounds. Dressel had six rebounds and Joey Laber four.
"They shot the ball well, but we didn’t rebound the ball when we had chances. Our rebounding and shooting were a problem," Sheridan said.
