SOUTH POINT – The antique cars came rumbling in and the booths soon filled with people and literature as the United Way began its annual kick-off on the parking lot of South Point Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club Friday.
The Lawrence County chapter has now begun its official collection of donations, marketing director Danne Dunworth-Steinberg said.
"Our goal for this year is $150,000," Mrs. Dunworth-Steinberg said. "All of the money we raise in Lawrence County stays to help Lawrence County people. We only have one campaign a year to support several agencies throughout the county."
She said the more than 100 volunteers will work through the end of the year to meet the goal for operating funds during the next year.
Co-chairman Jean Hamilton said this year’s event was the first "real" kick-off the Lawrence County chapter has ever had.
"We really have never had a kick-off quite this big," she said. "We decided to have the kick-off to let people know who the agencies are we support and why it is important to support them. It is a mammoth job to try to recruit the funds to help these agencies."
She said agencies such as the City Mission, Chesapeake Community Center, Well Child Clinic and the Arthritis Foundation are among the many that receive support from United Way.
