In the first two back-to-school previews for Lawrence County schools, parents have read a few tips from educators on how to make this school year a successful one for their children.

And the same answers will probably follow for the other five school districts that will be previewed in the coming week.

The advice does not begin with "go out and buy a Tommy Hilfiger sweater" or end with "don’t forget your football tickets."

The educators suggest that one of the best ways to make sure your children have a successful year is to be an active participant in their education.

From making sure they get to bed on time to spending an hour helping with their reading homework, parents have just as much of an effect on how their children perform in school as their teachers do.

And improving that performance should be as important to every parent as it already is to every teacher and administrator.

Education is the key to success for a child these days. Although straight-A’s might not be required to find a successful career, there is no question that there are few youths who will find a job without a high school diploma.

And that is just to get the basics. Good-paying jobs still require a college degree – or beyond.

Getting students off to a good start must begin now.

Parents can’t count on schools to do all the work.

With the dawn of another school year, it is time for school and home to join forces to produce a brighter future for our children.
