PORTSMOUTH – A freak fall proved to be the Coal Grove Hornets downfall.

When Jeff Hamilton slipped and fell on his first approach in the pole vault event Tuesday during the first day of the Division III district track meet, he suffered a concussion that did not allow him to complete in the event.

The repercussions were staggering.

Hamilton, who cleared 14 feet the previous week, was the easy favorite. But since he couldn’t clear his first attempt, he failed to place. Being a senior, Hamilton will not get another chance in the event. And with only four vaulters entered, he was guaranteed a place and at least four points.

And that place was all the Hornets needed.

South Webster won the district meet Friday by a single point, 145-144.

"It was very disappointing, not just for us, but even more so for Jeff," Hornets coach Nick Miller said. "If Jeff vaults, we win the meet, but more importantly Jeff’s a senior and he had a chance to go to the state meet. I feel really bad for him."

Hamilton was able to return Friday and responded by winning the long jump at 20-5 3/4.

In fact, the entire Hornets team responded well to the challenge including Dan Monnig who edged Chad Grashel of South Webster to win the 800 meter run. Teammate Steve Bruce was third to earn a trip to the regionals.

"The kids came back real well. For the kids to see what happened to Jeff who is our top point man, that was outstanding," said Miller. "Monnig lunges at the line and wins, and Pauley has his best time in the 400."

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the regionals.

Coal Grove’s Brandon Hicks claimed the discus at 139-10 and Ricky Wynn was third at 132-6. Rocky Pemberton advanced when he finished third in the pole vault.

Green’s Ryan Boggs won the shot put at 44-8 3/4. Wynn was second and teammate Dan Cordle third.

Coal Grove’s Dennis Wilson was third in the high jump at 5-10.

In running events, Clint Pauley was second in the 400 meter dash. Isaac Wood was second in the 1600 and 3200 runs, and Shaun Smith was runner-up in the 300 hurdles.

The Hornets 1600 and 3200 relay teams finished first and the 400 relay was second.

The Lady Hornets were third in the girls meet.

Leading the Lady Hornets was Jennifer Christian who claimed first place in the 800 meters with a 2:38.7 time.

Tara Jackson qualified in two open events as she finished second in the discus with a throw of 94-10 and third in the shot put with a 29-1 heave. Teammate Amber Harmon was fourth in the high jump at 4-6.

Coal Grove’s Candace Fyffe was second in the 200 meter dash while Mary Wineka was second in the 300 hurdles (52.2) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (18.6).

The 800 and 1600 relay teams finished second and 3200 relay squad was third to earn regionals berths.

Green’s Jamie Hurst advanced as she placed third in the long jump (14-7 3/4) while teammate Sheena Wallace was third in the 100 meter dash at 14.2 seconds.
