Mountain drove home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and give himself the pitching win as the Ironton Fighting Tigers beat the Division II 9th-ranked Portsmouth Trojans 6-5 Monday.
With the scored tied 5-5 and two out in the bottom of the seventh, Josh Harmon tripled into the right field corner. Mountain then singled to left on a 1-0 pitch to score Harmon with the winning run.
"This was a good win," Ironton coach Mark Lewis said. "Portsmouth has a good team. We got good pitching from (Chad) Parker and Mountain, and we didn’t have a lot of hits, but we had timely hits."
Parker went five innings striking out five, walking two, and allowing the five runs, four earned. Mountain finished the final two innings for his third win in four decisions. He struck out one, gave up one hit, and did not walk a batter.
Portsmouth (14-5) got a run in the top of the first when Jason Fleming singled, stole second, moved up on a ground out, and scored on Jeff Swords’ base hit.
But Ironton rallied for three runs in its half of the inning.
Drew Mains walked leading off, Clark Cooper doubled off the fence in left, and Jon Sites grounded out as Mains scored. With two outs, Harmon singled home Cooper.
Harmon then stole second and came around when Mountain, after fouling off five pitches, singled on a 3-2 pitch.
Portsmouth tied the game with a pair of runs in the third.
With one out, Fleming singled and Jay Stomboch tripled. Greg Estep grounded out to second as the run scored.
Both teams scored twice in the fifth.
Estep was safe on an error, Swords was hit by a pitch, and Jared Williams stroked a two-run double.
Matt Johnson, went to second on a balk, and took third on a wild pitch to start Ironton’s half of the inning. Mains walked and Cooper hit a slow grounder to third to score Johnson and send Mains to second. Sites and Parker walked to load the bases and Harmon hit into a fielder’s choice as the tying run scored.
The Trojans threatened in the top of the seventh when Estep got an infield hit and stole second to lead off the inning. But Mountain got a pop up, a strikeout, and a ground out to end the game.
