Tara Layne might have had the flu, but she proved to be poison to the Chesapeake Lady Panthers. Needing antibiotics to help her just make the game, Layne proceeded to allow only one hit as the Lady Pointers whipped the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 14-1 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Layne struck out nine, walked two, and hit a batter as she allowed only a fourth inning single by Shelli White.
The Lady Pointers bats got healthy with 14 hits led by Nikki Lewis who went 3-4, Nekka Mains and Whitney Morrison who were 3-5, and Layne who was 2-4.
Still feeling the effects of her illness, Layne came back on Saturday and picked up a pair of wins as the Lady Pointers swept a doubleheader from the Rock Hill in OVC games.
South Point rallied to win with three runs in the seventh to win the first game 5-4, then rolled to a 23-1 win in the nightcap.
Down 3-2 in the seventh inning of the first game, Brandi Thacker walked to start the comeback.
Sarah Stevens reached on a fielder’s choice with Thacker safe at second, and Shannon James walked to load the bases. Whitney Morrison and Erica Griffith walked to force in runs and tie the game, and Allison Perdue singled home the winning run.
Layne struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter while yielding just three hits over seven innings.
Rock Hill’s Marie Moore and Tess Howard limited South Point to four hits. Amanda Mays went 2-3 for the Redwomen.
In the second game, the Lady Pointers had 12 hits as they breezed to the win. Layne had to work only five innings to get the victory. She struck out five and did not issue a walk.
Morrison was 3-4 to lead the offense. Sarah Baise, James, Nekka Mains, Ashley Leighty, and Griffith all went 2-4.
South Point, 12-6 overall and 7-3 in the OVC, hosts Chesapeake Monday.
