CHESAPEAKE – Nobody’s perfect, but Jared Waggoner sure tried to be.
Waggoner, South Point’s senior pitcher, came within one pitch of a perfect game Friday as he led the Pointers to a 10-0 six inning Ohio Valley Conference win over the Chesapeake Panthers.
Waggoner allowed only one baserunner as he struck out six. Chesapeake’s Andy Clark hit a two-out fly ball double to right field that rightfielder Justin Eaches just missed making a diving catch.
"I kept the ball down, I had a good curveball, and I had good control," said Waggoner. "I knew Chesapeake had a bunch of good hitters, so I couldn’t afford to get the ball up in the strike zone."
Waggoner had only two full counts on the batters the entire game.
Besides his pitching, Waggoner was 2-for-3 with two doubles in a 12-hit attack. Jarred Perdue went 3-3 with a home run and a triple, Jamie Douglas was 2-4 with a home run, and Shane Fuller went 2-4.
South Point took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Eaches walked and Douglas clubbed his home run.
The lead went to 5-0 in the fourth.
Fuller singled to start the inning and scored an out later when Perdue tripled. A throwing error on the play allowed Perdue to score.
Brian Cremeans then doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, Eaches was hit by a pitch, and Waggoner doubled home a run.
The Pointers put the game away with six runs in the sixth.
Perdue had an inside-the-park home run to deep center field to start the inning.
An out later, Eaches walked, Patrick Panell singled, a wild pitch advanced the runner, and Waggoner doubled home a run. Douglas singled to put runners on the corner and drive in Panell.
Waggoner scored on an error and Dick Weaver singled for the final run.
South Point, 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the OVC, plays at Fairland Monday in a league game.
