Showing flashes of midseason form, Chesapeake breezed to a win in the Fairland Early Bird Relays Saturdays, the first time the Panthers have won the event.

Chesapeake won the meet with 114 points followed by Portsmouth at 98, Ironton 56, Fairland 48, South Point 46, and Rock Hill 32.

"We were sharper than I expected, and the kids competed well," Panthers coach Phil Davis said.

"Danny just kicked at the wrong time," said Davis. "Waugh went 20-5 in the long jump and he’s inexperienced. And I was happy with the way Robby performed."

The shot put also brought the Panthers a first place finish at 118-1 3/4 as Doug Wiley, Eric Myers, and James McQuaid combined efforts.

‘I was real happy with that time," said Davis.

Ironton coach Greg Cronacher was pleased with his team’s performance in the season’s first meet.

"We only had one first place finish, but we got a gamer effort from everybody which is what pleased me the most," said Cronacher. "A meet like this is a chance to see where you need work and it gives you some experience.

"Our younger guys showed a lot of heart and gave all they had. Their time is coming, they just have to wait their turn."

In the distance medley, Ironton’s team of Aaron Morrison, Seth Lewis, Ryan McClellan, and Brad Washburn took first place at 12:01.1
