COAL GROVE – Just try and hold ’em off until the Cavalry gets here.

That’s what happened to the South Point Pointers Friday night as they beat the Coal Grove Hornets 77-56 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Pointers offense struggled the first half with the exception of Brian Cremeans who scored 14 of his game-high 19 points.

South Point jumped out to a 17-5 first quarter lead, then held on as Coal Grove battled back to trail just 28-24 at the half.

"B. J. (Ferrell) and Shane (Holsinger) weren’t scoring early. That was a big thing. Brian Cremeans carried us the first half. If he doesn’t, we would have been in a lot of trouble," Pointers coach Mark Lafon said.

Ferrell and Holsinger combined for just nine points the first half. Holsinger finished with 18 points and Ferrell 12 as South Point pulled away to the win.

Both teams scored 17 points the third quarter to make it a 45-41, but Holsinger scored 11 points the fourth quarter as South Point exploded for 32 points and won going away.

Despite the 21-point win, Lafon was impressed with the Hornets.

"I tell you, Coal Grove plays their guts out, and they run their offense well. (Coach) Darrell (Humphreys) does a great job with them," said Lafon.

South Point, 7-11 on the season and 3-4 in the OVC, also got 15 points and nine rebounds from Willie Anderson. Ferrell had seven rebounds.

The Pointers were playing without leading rebounder Jarred Perdue who was out with the flu.

Coal Grove (2-13, 0-6) was led by Dean Mader with 14 points while Brandon Hicks scored 10 and Jason Adams nine.

On Tuesday, South Point hosts Portsmouth while Coal Grove hosts Fairland in an OVC game.
