PROCTORVILLE – A lot of things happen in an overtime game, but the thing that caught the eye of Fairland head coach Joey Thacker was the Dragons defense.
Fairland and Rock Hill both had their shares of big plays Friday in the Dragons 50-46 Ohio Valley Conference overtime win, but it was the defense that made the difference to Thacker.
"We played pretty good man-to-man defense," said Thacker.
"We didn’t shoot well at first, but we moved the ball well. We were lackadaisical defensively the first quarter, so we came out in a man the second quarter and held them to seven points. The defense picked it up a and Jay (Capper) took over the game. They only scored 30 points in three and a half quarters."
Jay Capper had a game-high 23 points to pace Fairland (11-6, 4-2 OVC). Aaron Swanton had 11 points and three assists while Buddy Massie scored 11. Josh Dunfee led with five rebounds.
Rock Hill (6-11, 2-5 OVC) was led by Brent McCoy with 19 points and Brian Tennant with 13.
The Redmen were up 16-9 after the first quarter but just 23-18 at the half.
Capper came to life the second half and scored six points the third quarter to get the deficit to 31-28, and he scored six more the fourth quarter. K. C. Jones rebounded a missed shot and scored with 20 seconds left to tie the game and force the overtime.
"Jay just wanted the ball. He stepped up and took the ball to the basket," said Thacker. "But the key was not getting frustrated with our shooting, and our defensive play. Both teams played well. Our kids were intense and focused."
Fairland scored off the tip in overtime and went on to score on every possession.
The Dragons led by four when David Schug hit a 3-pointer for the Redmen to make it a one-point game. Rock Hill had another chance to score and go ahead, but Jones took a charge and Massie sank 3 of 4 from the line down the stretch to season the win.
"Swanton and Massie were a combined 5 of 6 at the foul line in overtime. That was a plus," said Thacker. "And K. C. Jones did a great job for us defensively."
