In today’s edition of The Ironton Tribune, on this page in fact, Ironton City Council member Hugh Scott has issued a call to arms for every citizen who wants to be part of protecting the future of the city and Lawrence County.

Scott suggests that the city needs to gather its own recruiting group – professionals and citizens who can meet and talk about not only the future, but how to get the message to employers about the available properties, workers and other benefits to relocating their businesses here.

And this is not just a job for elected officials, either. There are plenty of citizens and others with good ideas who could contribute mightily to developing a plan to bolster economic development in the city and county.

But first, the city needs a real meeting – a chance for residents to talk about ALL their concerns and a forum that encourages suggestions and plans for building a positive future for our children and grandchildren.

Scott is right. Waiting around for someone in Columbus to do something for us or relying on one person to do the job of bringing more industry to this area is not the way to make sure there will be jobs here not just for a few years, but for many decades after that.

If we want something done, we have to be willing to work hard. Scott has sounded the charge: It is up to us to answer.
