Portsmouth – Too many. That was the key phrase as the Rock Hill Redwomen lost 57-49 to the Portsmouth Lady Trojans Monday.

"We turned the ball over too many times the fourth quarter, and we put them at the line too many times," Rock Hill coach Tracy Mullens said. "And we just put (Jessica) Wood at the line too many times the second half."

Wood scored 20 points including 10-of-14 at the line as Portsmouth avenged an earlier loss to the Redwomen. Courtney Clifford added 15 points.

Rock Hill was led by Michelle Matkins with 13 points. Mandy McDonie had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Jordan Edwards and Bobbi Clark had six rebounds each.

The game was tied 11-11 after the first quarter. Matkins scored 8 points the second quarter as Rock Hill took a 27-23 halftime lead, but Clark picked up her third foul in the process.

Portsmouth came back to tie the game at 34-34 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, Rock Hill’s Amanda Mays scored 7 points including 5-of-6 at the line, but Portsmouth converted 9-of-17 from the line the fourth quarter.

"Rebounding really hurt us, and we really didn’t shoot well," Mullens said. "Wood dominated the boards and Bobbi got in foul trouble."

The loss was the first of the season after six wins for Rock Hill. The Redwomen travel to Gallipolis Thursday.
