Rotary marks 90th year of service

Published Sunday, February 7, 2010

Although the birthday celebration won’t be until March, the community can help the Ironton Rotary Club mark a tremendous milestone a little early.

The civic organization that focuses on a variety of community projects is gearing up for its 90th birthday on March 3 but the community can mark these nine decades of service this Saturday — and well-wishers can fill their bellies at the same time.

The annual Rotary Pancake Breakfast will be from 7 a.m. to noon at the AEP building across from CVS on Third Street.

This event, which is one part family reunion and one part community celebration, is the club’s biggest fundraiser and provides the capital for a variety of projects that indirectly touch the lives of thousands of Lawrence Countians and also many others across the world.

The club has participated in a variety of projects over the years but its current slate features providing dictionaries to every third grade student in Lawrence County, continuing its long-standing nursing scholarship for local students, the renovation of the Center Street fountain in Ironton and expansion of a library in Belize, just to name a few.

An added benefit to this year’s pancake breakfast is that diners can get full and stay healthy at the same time.

The Ironton Health Department will be offering free flu shots at the event.

The Ironton Rotary Club has served the community well for 90 years. The best birthday present citizens can give the civic club is to show up, show their support and say “Here’s to 90 more years.”

Would it have been that difficult to have specified the Rotary Pancake Breakfast will be February 13th, instead of "this Saturday"?
