This one was settled quickly.
Coal Grove jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back as the Lady Hornets beat the Portsmouth West Lady Senators 53-28 on Monday.
“We played well in spurts,” said Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller. “These kinds of games are hard. When you get a big lead it’s hard to stay focused.”
Jordyn Cox scored six points and Chelsea Delong four as Coal Grove took a 13-0 first quarter lead.
Taylor Sexton had four points to lead a balance offense in the second quarter as the lead grew to 32-8 at the half.
Delong hit a pair of 3-poitners and Cox scored five over the first half of the third quarter before Miller pulled his starters.
Miller emptied his bench in the fourth quarter.
Cox finished with 21 points and Delong 12 for the Lady Hornets (15-3).
Coal Grove will host South Point on Thursday in a pivotal Ohio Valley Conference game. The Lady Hornets must win in order to earn a share of the league title.
South Point, who won the earlier meeting, has already clinched a share of the title.
“We’re looking forward to playing them. We know they’ll be a tough challenge for us,” said Miller.
