COAL GROVE — They’ve proposed and he said he’s prepared to accept.

The Dawson-Bryant Board of Education Friday night offered the position of superintendent to Scioto County educator Dennis DeCamp, who said he plans to accept the post. DeCamp will meet with the board this week to discuss salary and benefits, board president Sadie Mulkey said. Decamp, 48, of Wheelersburg, said he is pleased to join a district that has a reputation for academic excellence. He said being offered the job was “a great honor.”

“I have always admired Dawson-Bryant for being on the cutting edge of academic success and I look forward to being a part of it,” DeCamp said.

He is a graduate of Wheelersburg High School, received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Ohio University and his master’s degree from the University of Dayton. He was director of operations at the Sciotoville Community School since its inception in 2001 until last week. Prior to that he was an administrator in the Portsmouth City School.

Mulkey said DeCamp was chosen based on his involvement with curriculum at the Sciotoville Community School and his willingness to continue the district’s plan for improvement.

Eleven people submitted resumes for the position. Of those, six were interviewed. The decision to offer the job to DeCamp was 3-2, with Deanna Holliday, Jamie Murphy and Debbie Drummond voting in favor of the idea. Mulkey Jim Beals voted against the move.

“He had a good interview, but I just thought we had good people within our district and we should hire from within,” Mulkey said.

DeCamp replaces Dr. Jim Payne who is taking the position of superintendent of the Lawrence County Educational Services at the beginning of 2009.
