NEW BOSTON — The famed rock group The Monkees once sang a song that said:
“I wished that I had stayed in bed
The covers wrapped around my head
Instead of waking up to find
A nightmare of a different kind.
She went away. This just doesn’t seem to be my day.”
It wasn’t the St. Joseph Flyers’ day or night for that matter as the scored a season-low point total in a 50-38 loss to the New Boston Tigers on Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
“We just couldn’t make shots. We played hard and got good shots, but we have to shoot it well,” said Flyers’ coach Chris Barnes.
“Their big kid (Kyle Sexton) had half their points. He’s a big, strong kid.”
The “big kid” was Kyle Sexton who scored 26 points as New Boston (9-0, 5-0) took sole possession of first place.
Ryan Payne scored 15 points and J.C. Damron 9 for the Flyers fell to 8-2 and 4-1.
New Boston went up 11-5 the first quarter as Sexton scored 7 points.
The Tigers pulled ahead 25-16 at the half as Sexton had 6 mores points.
Jimmy Mahlmeister scored all 4 of his points, Damron had 4 more points and Payne hit a 3-pointer.
The Flyers showed some life offensively in the third quarter as Jared Johnson came off the bench to score 6 points and Payne hit another trifecta and scored 5 points, but Sexton had 11 of New Boston’s 17 points and the lead was 42-29.
The scoring nearly came to a crawl in the fourth quarter as the Flyers outscored the Tigers 9-8. Payne had 7 of the Flyers’ points.
The Flyers host Portsmouth Clay Tuesday.
